Purpose of the Job

As a Laboratory Technician, you will perform essential laboratory tests in a timely and accurate manner according to established protocols and methodology with minimal supervision to determine biological, biochemical, and physical characteristics of water and wastewater samples. The Laboratory Technician will also perform the required supporting administrative functions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Sets up, adjusts, and operates laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Receives samples and respective paperwork from operators. Verifies recorded information on sample bottles, the chain of custody forms, and sample logs for accuracy.
  • Delivers samples and supplies to designated work areas.
  • Stores samples in refrigerator or incubator in the manner specified by supervisor.
  • Tests samples for the presence and content of elements or substances such as suspended solids, total solids, volatile solids, organics as measured by biochemical oxygen demand, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, fecal coliform, and other constituents found in water and wastewater samples.
  • Calculates and records test results on standardized forms. Prepares graphs and charts as requested.
  • Performs quality control analyses, as required, and provides documentation in the daily log book.
  • Disposes of old sample material and cleans, dries, and stores sample bottles. Maintains inventory of clean, capped sample bottles in an orderly manner for operators.
  • Prepares cleaning solutions according to manufacturer's directions or as specified by supervisor.
  • Cleans, sterilizes, and stores laboratory glassware, equipment, and instruments.
  • Calibrates and maintains records of laboratory instruments.
  • Prepare chemical solutions according to standard formulas and apply identification labels.

Work Experience

High School education or equivalent is required. Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or Biology is preferred. At least two (2) years of experience in a lab position responsible for following analytical procedures, including performing tests to generate results is required.
