Overview
Suburban Water Systems is seeking a motivated Civil Engineering Designer to join our Engineering team. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on a wide variety of water infrastructure projects, including pipelines, pump stations, tanks, and wells, while developing skills in engineering design, CAD, and construction support.
We are looking for candidates who enjoy solving technical challenges, working in both the office and the field, and contributing to projects that provide our customers with safe, reliable water supply.
This position is ideal for:
- Engineering graduates seeking practical design and project experience.
- CAD professionals with utility or civil infrastructure experience.
- Individuals pursuing an Engineering-in-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer licensure.
Work Location and Schedule
Location: Covina, California (Hybrid)
Department: Engineering
Status: Regular Full-Time
Schedule: Monday through Thursday and every other Friday (9/80 Schedule)
What You'll Do
Engineering Design & Drafting
- Prepare engineering plans and construction drawings for pipelines, wells, reservoirs, pump stations, valve stations, and related water facilities.
- Develop plan and profile drawings, site plans, details, and construction exhibits.
- Research existing utility infrastructure and develop accurate project base maps.
- Review record drawings, GIS data, and utility records to support project design.
Field Investigations
- Visit project sites to document existing conditions and collect field measurements.
- Coordinate utility investigations and confirm facility locations.
- Photograph and document project sites to support design development.
- Assist with surveying and construction staking activities.
Engineering Analysis & Planning
- Assist with preparation of engineering studies, design reports, quantity takeoffs, and cost estimates.
- Analyze system operational data and prepare technical exhibits, charts, and graphics.
- Evaluate alternative solutions and make recommendations for infrastructure improvements.
What You'll Bring
Minimum Qualifications
One of the following:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering discipline; or
- Associate of Science degree or Certificate in Drafting, Engineering Technology, or related field, three years or more of civil, utility, construction, or CAD design experience plus ability to obtain State Water Resources Control Board Operator 1 and Treatment 1 within 24 months of hire
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using MicroStation, AutoCAD Civil 3D, or similar CAD software.
- Experience with utilities, water systems, public works, or civil infrastructure projects.
- Familiarity with GIS or construction plan preparation.
- Strong communication skills.

Work Environment and Conditions
Works primarily in an office environment using CAD and engineering software, while also conducting site visits to water system facilities, construction sites, and project locations to gather field data and verify existing conditions.
The role requires prolonged periods of sitting and computer work, as well as walking, standing, and navigating outdoor project sites. Employees must be able to operate a company vehicle, occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds, and work safely in varying weather and environmental conditions. Field work may involve exposure to construction activities, noise, uneven terrain, and utility infrastructure
