Purpose of the Job

 

Our South Carolina Water Utilities Team is looking for a Service Technician- Line Locator to work with our field team. The Service Technician- Line Locator is responsible for accurately locating underground facilities including, but not limited to, water and sewer systems.  The Utility Locate Technician must be able to drive a company vehicle, work outdoors, and operate independently.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Understand the use of magnetic, radar, and electrical equipment to locate lines.
  • Locate underground utilities including water and sewer systems accurately, safely, and efficiently using company-provided equipment in roadways, in easements on private property, and in other locations using required spray paint, flags, and other materials. 
  • Thoroughly search for underground utilities using all available resources.
  • Complete locates within required deadlines.  
  • Utilizing GPS or surveying equipment to pinpoint coordinates of lines.
  • Read and interpret maps, engineering documents, historical records, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to identify the type, size, and location of underground utilities  
  • Use a laptop computer in the field to receive, document, and close out excavation notices.
  • Communicate with excavators, utility personnel, and others regarding projects and underground facilities.  
  • Operates and maintains power-generating equipment to provide electricity for the plant.
  • Communicate with clients, engineers, and management.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Work Experience

1-2 years experience in locating underground utilities and operating GIS.
