Overview

 

Fairbanks Sewer and Water has an opportunity for a Golden Heart Utilities for a Water Treatment Operator Trainee. The position is responsible for the operation and routine maintenance, under supervision, of the water treatment plant.  

 

Work Location and Hours

This position will be based in Fairbanks, AK. Schedule is Monday through Friday. After-hour and weekend on-call support may be required. Must be available to work shift work; weekend scheduling may be required.

What You'll Do

  • Performing a variety of monitoring tasks, controlling pump operations, adjustments of chemical feeders.
  • Adjustments of chemical feeders.
  • Preparing chemical solutions.
  • Adjusting valves.
  • Adjusting filters.
  • Responding to water needs of a fire department.
  • Maintenance of equipment.
  • Maintaining reportable operating records.
  • Mopping and dusting.
  • Chemical testing of the water for pH, hardness, alkalinity, iron, chlorine residual, etc.
  • Performing related tasks as assigned.

Purpose of the Job

 

Education and Licenses

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent
  • Driver’s license
  • Driving record acceptable by company insurance requirements
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Level 4 Water Treatment Operator’s Certificate of competency as issued by the State of Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation within the time allowed in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Self-motivation, innovative, and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instruction.
  • Knowledge and competency in following safety rules and regulations.
  • Perform meticulous and detail-oriented plant adjustments and recordings.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and procedures.
  • Knowledge of machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to follow plant standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to make arithmetic calculations to determine dose and feed rates for chemicals.
  • Ability to inspect plant operating equipment and take corrective actions.
  • Ability to react calmly and take proper remedial action in an operational emergency.
  • Ability to perform chemical analysis and interpret the results.
  • Must be physically able to enter and work in confined spaces.
  • Exhibit physical dexterity to work in awkward positions.
  • Able to perform duties while standing, stooping, twisting, bending, kneeling or from prone position.
  • Capable of extending arms overhead for extended periods of time while performing duties.
  • Must be capable of regularly lifting 50-pounds.
  • Must be physically able to dust, mop, sweep, and keep the plant in a clean condition.
  • Must be physically able to climb ladders and stairs.
  • Must be physically able to perform grounds keeping tasks.

Work Environment

  • Extreme physical demands, including lifting (75 lbs.), walking, climbing and mechanical repair.
  • You will be expected to work in all weather conditions: rain, snow, extreme heat and cold, etc; you may encounter various potential hazards in the field.
