Overview
The positions of this class are responsible for performing a variety of skilled utility maintenance, repair and limited construction duties associated with water distribution. Work ranges from laboring activities to skilled tasks requiring physical exertion to varying degrees of manipulative skills involving the use of a variety of hand and power tools and the routine operation of trucks and related utility maintenance equipment.
Location and work schedule: This position is based in Fairbanks, AK.
What You'll Do
Assignments include, but are not limited to:
- Installing new water services by tapping into mains and attaching the appropriate fittings.
- Installing main “tees” for attaching fire hydrants and lines.
- Maintaining and repairing equipment at distribution pump stations.
- Investigates complaints to identify problems with the water distribution system.
- Rebuilding circulating pumps and replacing motor bearings.
- Performs related work as assigned.
What You'll Bring
Education/Experience
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid first aid card as issued by an agency authorized by the State of Alaska.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of Alaska commercial driver’s license in accordance with the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986.
- Ability to obtain the required water distribution Certificate of Competency as issued by the State of Alaska, Department of Environmental Conservation within the timeline shown in 15.2 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- Possession of a valid Certificate of Fitness Plumbing Card issued by the Alaska Department of Labor.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
These factors will be the basis for selecting the most qualified candidates to be interviewed. Candidates selected for employment must satisfactorily demonstrate possession of these factors during a prescribed probationary period for continued employment.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to work of this class.
- Ability to operate assigned tools and equipment skillfully and safely.
- Ability to detect needed repairs in the distribution system, make necessary repairs, and perform necessary maintenance.
- Ability to resolve unusual problems associated with assigned work.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, and the general public.
- Ability to interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications.
- Ability to work overtime and on-call duty as assigned on a rotating basis.
- Capable of lifting a minimum of 50 pounds above waist height (3 feet or higher).
- Able to work in cramped, uncomfortable spaces with low light conditions.
- Physical dexterity to work in awkward positions for up to one (1) hour at a time.
- Lifting, pulling, or pushing for a significant portion of a workday.
- Work outdoors in extreme weather conditions for a significant portion of a workday.
- Perform duties standing, stooping, twisting, bending, kneeling, or from prone position for up to one (1) hour at a time.
- Capable of extending arms overhead for extended periods of time while performing duties.
Work Environment
- Extreme physical demands, including lifting (75 lbs.), walking, climbing and mechanical repair.
- You will be expected to work in all weather conditions: rain, snow, extreme heat and cold, etc. You may encounter various potential hazards in the field.
