Overview
Suburban Water Systems is seeking an intern to support our GIS team for four-five months. This role will provide Suburban Water Systems GIS Department with additional support to complete projects during the summer construction season. The intern position supports the successful candidate with the opportunity to experience a hands-on learning experience outside of the classroom and in their field of coursework to better prepare them for a career in geospatial technologies.
Work Location and Schedule
- Primarily based at our La Mirada, CA office
- Work Schedule: Up to 24 hours/week
What You'll Do
· Ensure safety protocols are followed at all times.
· Performs a variety of GIS technical support tasks within ESRI’s mapping software
· Ensure iOS iPad and GNSS receiver remain fully charged while not in use and that the equipment remains in good operating condition.
· Data collection in the field may include the following:
1. GNSS survey locations of utility assets and/or related information
2. Photos of utility assets and/or related features
3. Data entry of field observations and feature attributes into iOS mobile forms and tables
· Performs quality checks and reviews scanned documents for 100% data capture
· Prepare maps, charts, graphs, reports
What You'll Bring
Education / Licenses / Certifications
- Must be 18 years of age
- Driver’s License: Hold a valid California driver’s license with acceptable driving record as determined by Company insurance carrier; Familiar with safety practices and rules applicable to job duties.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must have a basic understanding of geography, coordinate systems, GPS receivers, and their networks.
- Accurately perform basic GIS duties using Suburban’s GIS system
- Prepare maps, graphs, and reports. Interpret and analyze technical information and Regulatory guidelines
- Perform data entry in existing databases and understand basic principles of water technology
- Perform quality control and data verification of data and reports.
- Scan, index, and quality control large-format engineer drawings
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices
