Purpose of the Job

The Engineering Intern position is intended as an entry level engineering position. This position will require significant direction regarding methodology and strategy from the Vice President of Engineering and more experienced department personnel to perform duties. This position is required to provide progress updates to the Vice President of Engineering.

The engineer will execute duties related to the following department responsibilities: Capital Improvement Program; Water Service Planning for Developers, Governmental Agency Coordination; and Operations Support. These duties are summarized below:

Essential Functions Statement(s) 
This position will be willing and able to perform the following duties and others as assigned:

Project Management

Engineering consultant and construction contractor contract management, including requests for qualifications; request for quotation; competitive bidding; change orders; request for information; material specification review; field investigation, construction inspection; contract commitment and invoice tracking; permit acquisition from city, county, state, and federal agencies.

Engineering Design

Coordinate and perform engineering plan and specification preparation for water infrastructure projects. Read manufacturers product specifications and determine if products are suitable for application or meet contract specifications. Review archived record drawings and GIS for project examples and existing as-built conditions.

Review and comment on plans and specifications prepared by internal or external design groups. Coordinate review of plans and specifications by operations personnel. 

Perform field investigations or planned projects to determine existing conditions and project requirements.

Water infrastructure projects include the following elements: water pumps, wooden and block buildings, electric motors, natural gas engines, wells, pipelines, reservoirs, reservoir coating and painting, cathodic protection (impressed and sacrificial), pressure control valves, instrumentation and telemetry (SCADA), electrical (MCC, VFD, circuit breakers, transformers, conduits, wiring), ventilation and air conditioning, grading, paving, storm drain, sewer, landscaping, fencing, site improvements, basic level surveying and construction staking, natural gas engines, diesel generator set. Geotechnical testing and design, structural design, land surveying (topographic, boundary, metes and bounds descriptions and plats), and painting and coating services are normally procured from consulting engineers, however a working knowledge of these fields is preferred.

Preparing Project Design Reports

Determine need for a project; describe background of existing facilities and nature of problem to be resolved; analyze operations data (SCADA and system equipment settings), and prepare graphs and tables to demonstrate verify and test assumptions; determine alternative solutions, describing alternatives, list the advantages and disadvantages of alternatives, research component costs and historical bid tabulations to prepare preliminary cost estimates for alternatives, make recommendations for preferred alternative, and describe decision methodology for recommendation.

Hydraulic Modeling and Analysis: Perform simple hydraulic analysis including pipe velocity, head loss, hydraulic and energy grade lines, pump characteristic curves, fire flow availability, manually, using spreadsheets and the hydraulic model to determine operating characteristics of improvements and effects of proposed improvements on the existing distribution system.

Meeting Coordination: Prepare for and lead meetings with agencies, contractors, operations personnel, customers, developers, consultants, vendors. Prepare agendas, take meeting notes, and action items from meeting, prepare meeting minutes, and then follow up and complete actions items.
 

Education

College Student enrolled in a four (4) year Bachelor of Science degree focused on Engineering is required, concentration in Civil Engineering is preferred.
